The power of stories to build a sustainable future
At Fruit At Work, everything revolves around making a sustainable impact. As a United Nations SDG Ambassador, we are committed to not only integrating sustainability into our own operations, but also inspiring and supporting others in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One initiative we’re especially proud of is our partnership with the non-profit organization Sustainable Stories.

Magic and sustainability in children’s hands
Sustainable Stories vzw has a beautiful mission: to inspire children between the ages of 5 and 10 to make the world a better place with an active and entrepreneurial mindset. How? Through hands-on storybooks that connect the heart, mind, and hands of young readers.
Each book is an enchanting tale, beautifully illustrated and fully aligned with a specific Sustainable Development Goal. In addition to the story, every book includes conversation starters, fun facts, games, and practical activities that encourage children to take action themselves. This helps them not only think about sustainability, but also understand how they can make a difference.
Free books for every school in Belgium
The best part of this project? Every book – along with fully developed teaching materials – is made available for free to all Belgian schools: 3,040 schools in Flanders and 1,942 in Wallonia. This lowers the threshold for teachers and reaches thousands of children.
The impact of Sustainable Stories is made possible through a broad collaboration between teachers, child psychologists, entrepreneurs, companies (like Fruit At Work), and knowledge institutions. We support the project both financially and through communications. And soon, we’ll be welcoming the founders of Sustainable Stories as guests on our podcast!

The fifth book: “Little dragon’s power creates wonder”
“Little dragon’s power creates wonder” playfully introduces children to SDG 12 – responsible consumption and production – and the concept of the circular economy. The story transports children to a magical dragon realm where a new Mega Dragon is being elected. Each dragon shows off their powers, but Little Dragon doesn’t seem to stand a chance… until creativity and perseverance lead him to create a dragon egg from recycled scraps. What starts as a problem turns into a powerful lesson on the value of reuse, innovation, and making dreams come true.
Making an impact together
At Fruit At Work, we firmly believe that habits formed in youth will last a lifetime. That’s why we are committed to teaching children healthy and sustainable habits from an early age. In addition to our collaboration with Sustainable Stories, we promote healthy eating through free fruit at schools via the Oog voor Lekkers project and the Smakelijke Scholen program. We believe that giving children a strong foundation not only leads to better choices later in life but also has a positive impact on society as a whole.
